A phishing scam is doing the rounds on the Internet, and is targeted towards users with Apple ID and iCloud account. Read on.
Users of Apple products are apparently receiving emails that claim to be from Apple support. The email urges users to complete their account verification, failing which their Apple ID and iCloud will be suspended.
The email also tries to convince the user by informing that the Apple Support had sent such notifications earlier, but they did not receive any response. There is a ‘Verify Now’ button in the email, clicking on which, will supposedly allow the user to complete the verification process for their Apple ID. But, what really happens is this.
- Clicking on the ‘Verify Now’ button takes the user to a fake page that looks exactly like an Apple Login Page.
- Thereafter, the user gets redirected to another fake Apple page that asks for personal and financial information such as banking and credit/debit card details.
Now, there might be some users (investigators) who might suspect the email to be a phishing attack and would like to test what happens if they proceed further. So, even if they provide false details in these fake pages, they will be automatically redirected to an adult website, which could be compromised and may infect the user’s system with a malware.
What should you do?
- Never trust any email that asks you to give away your personal or financial information, even if the email seems to be from a legit company.
- If the email sounds too urgent, then contact the customer care of the organization by visiting its official website.
- Do not visit login pages of any website by clicking on links embedded in emails or text messages. The safest way is to type the site’s URL in the address bar and then proceed.
- Have an antivirus software in your computer that can detect and block spam and unwanted messages – these are the most common carriers of infected attachments and phishing links.
